Help restore the coral reefs North of Bali

    Detailed programme

Our partner is an NGO, located in the small fisher village of Tianyar, on the North-East coastline of Bali. Their main goal is to make the coral reef healthier and more diverse since it has been destroyed by intensive fishing in the past. Until the 1950s, the Tianyar beach was a harbour, where fishermen dropped their anchor into the coral reef. Back then, coral was used to build homes and facilities when it was crushed into fine white powder. Nowadays, the marine ecosystem is under pressure because of plastic pollution.
Our partner created this project in 2017 to address these issues and make marine life healthier.
This project consists of building artificial coral reefs to rebuild the natural habitat, where the coral has been destroyed. Through this initiative, permanent jobs have been created for the local population. Local fishermen help deploy these artificial structures into water. More than 15,000 artificial coral reefs have found their place underwater.

    YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER
Your week is organised this way: starting on Monday and finishing on Thursday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You will get a one hour-break for lunch. Your main missions are:
    ● Building and deployment of artificial coral structures on fishermen’s boats
    ● Beach cleaning
    ● Diving to install the artificial coral structures underwater (optional)
    ● Turtles conservation during nesting and hatching seasons (between April and
    September).

    Free time
Volunteers can enjoy a three-day weekend to explore Bali! Many temples and waterfalls can be visited and trek through the dense jungles. Those with a diving certification, can explore the famous diving sites such as Tulamben and Amed.

    Location

    - This project is located in the North of Bali, in Tianyar. You have to arrive at least
one day prior, on Sunday, since the programme starts in the morning, each Monday.

Tianyar is far away from the explosion of tourism in the south and other areas of Bali. This makes the village the perfect location to observe and learn local traditions and cultures and make you really feel like you are making a difference when volunteering. The coastline stretches out for miles and offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Northern Bali.
The famous Gunung Agung (Mount Agung), the highest volcano in Bali, is just a short drive away and will provide you with many picture-perfect moments. Located on the slopes of the mountain, the Besakih temple complex was undamaged by the eruption and is now considered the most important temple on the island – well worth a visit.
